Restaurant U Schnellů is a jewel among Prague restaurants and carries with it more than two centuries of rich history. We are located in a historically protected building on the picturesque Tomášská Street No. 27, whose name is associated with the prominent German Schnell merchant family. History, culture and excellent gastronomy are intertwined here.​

The story of our restaurant

The history of U Schnell goes back to the middle of the 18th century, when the family of Andreas Josef Schnell came to Prague and established their merchant shop in Malá Strana. The family bought a part of today's house, which was then called U Obrazu Panny Marie, already in 1779. Nine years later, in 1788, they bought the neighboring building U Zlatého čápa. In 1811, they combined these two buildings into a single classicist house.

Bedřich Schnell and his legacy

A significant moment in the history of the Schnells was the death of Bedřich Schnell, the last male descendant of the family, on May 10, 1897. The former police commissioner surprisingly bequeathed most of the family property to purely Czech associations, including Matica školská. This act aroused a great response among the patriots, and Bedřich Schnell was given a majestic funeral. The famous writer Karel Václav Rais wrote a biographical work, which was illustrated by the painter Josef Ženíšek, and the sculptor Vilím Amort created a bronze plaque for Schnell's tombstone.

Famous guests

For the Schnells, it became a place where culture and art collided. Over the years, many famous personalities from the ranks of National Theater singers, important actors, composers, writers and artists have met at our tables. Among our frequent guests were personalities such as Eduard Vojan, Karel Burian, Rudolf Deyl the Elder, Jiřina Šejbalová, Zdeněk Štěpánek, Růžena Nasková, Vilém Mrštík, Vítězslav Nezval, Jaroslav Seifert, Adolf Kašpar, Adolf Hoffmeister, Rudolf Friml, Karel Weis, Karel Kovařovic, Karel Hawithler and many others.

In the second half of the 20th century, U Schnellů was visited by famous artists such as Jan Werich, Bedřich Kopecný, Jiří Winter Neprakta, Bohumil Hrabal and Vladimír Boudník. Unforgettable guests were also those who lived in the house, such as screenwriter, director and producer Pavel Juráček.
